WirbelX: Democratizing Information

Strategic Redesign and UX/UI for Open Data Accessibility

Access to validated data is a cornerstone of democratic transparency. WirbelX was born as an independent initiative to break down the technical barriers that often surround Open Data. We worked alongside its founder, Diego Lopez Yse, to transform a technical repository into a tool for citizen empowerment—designed to turn public information into knowledge that anyone can use.

Interface Redesign & Data Experience

In a context of information overload and fake news, visual clarity is a tool for resistance. We designed the WirbelX interface under the premise that misunderstood data is, effectively, non-existent.

We focused on the architecture of critical sections: the Homepage—designed to build credibility and community—and the data explorer. Our priority was ensuring that, upon entering the site, users could immediately visualize the volume of available information, organized into five strategic pillars: Economy, Demographics, Health, Education, and Climate Change. The use of color was essential to establish a hierarchy among these categories, guiding the eye through dense data sets without overwhelming the experience.

Visualization & Technical Precision

We optimized country and indicator filters to ensure seamless navigation, allowing the platform to tell real stories about territories rather than just displaying isolated figures. We designed a geographic visualization system that allows users to intuitively understand data density, integrating choropleth maps with detailed ranking tables.

To ensure the project’s viability during the development phase, we integrated the amCharts library, selected for its ability to handle highly interactive JavaScript maps. This integration facilitates critical analysis and evidence-based decision-making, transforming technical complexity into a professional and accessible consulting tool.

Data with Purpose

Beyond the visual design, we actively collaborated with the client on copywriting and content structure. The goal was to demonstrate the platform’s potential through real-world use cases: from combating fake news to predicting scenarios for evidence-based decisions.

We proposed a communication strategy that humanizes data, focusing on interoperability and technical availability. We successfully shifted WirbelX from being a mere repository to becoming a dynamic search engine, where visual clarity amplifies the value of public information.
