Kuala Lumpur Magazine

Interface design, user experience, and illustration for digital publishing

We designed a high-end interactive magazine focused on exclusive tourism in Kuala Lumpur. The project was conceived as a flagship piece to showcase the potential of emerging HTML5 reading technologies, where editorial design merges with tablet and smartphone interactivity to create an immersive experience.

A City of Multiple Facets

Kuala Lumpur is defined by the contrast between its historical and cultural legacy and the futuristic development of its urban centers. Throughout the design process, we sought to visually translate the amalgam of cultures—Islamic, Chinese, Indian, and Malay—that coexist in the city.

We used illustration and typographic hierarchy to reflect this multifaceted identity, ensuring the magazine’s aesthetics met the standards of an international luxury destination. Each section was given its own visual personality, consistent with the destination’s narrative.

Beautiful and usable across all formats

The technical challenge involved designing a flexible style guide capable of adapting to multiple screen formats and orientations. This was not merely about rearranging elements, but about rethinking interactions so the reading experience would feel organic on both tablets and smartphones.

We developed visual structures that vary by device, optimizing readability and editorial rhythm. This foundation was designed as a scalable system, allowing the magazine’s architecture to adapt to new content and future destinations while maintaining a high-fidelity design standard.
